Darts
Darts is a game of skill that has gained popularity around the world. With
a little practice, it can be learned in a relatively short period of time. Even
a novice can have fun playing it. It is fun to watch an advanced player throw
the dart with great speed and precision. Darts can be played with a group of
friends, in a league or individually. Today online and electronic
games have become popular.
History
The game of darts comes from England during the Middle Ages. It seems that soldiers invented the game to play as a means to stay alert. They used their weapons of war, which were arrows. Before long a cross section of a tree was used as the target. The rings of the tree made for a perfect scoring system. The closer you got to the center of the ring, the higher the score. During cold weather, the game was moved inside and the long arrows became cumbersome. Ingenious fans created short arrows called darts. As the British Empire spread, soldiers took their fun game to many corners of the world.
Darts remains a popular game in pubs or bars but have also moved into the mainstream and is now classified as a favorite pastime for many people. In 1954 the National Darts Association was established and with that came championship competitions.
Equipment
To add a dart board to your rec room
means hours of fun competition for every member of your family. You will need
to purchase a dart backboard or cabinet,
the board, and a set of darts. Darts are generally made of brass, silver/nickel
or the more expensive tungsten. There are a number of price points available;
from rather expensive tournament quality to a beginner’s set, perfect
for the novice. A game can be set up in a garage, back porch, rec room or family
room. When using steel tip darts, it’s
important to make sure that the area is safe and away from where children may
play or where people may need to walk. Games
A number of games have been invented
using darts and a board. The game of 01 is the most popular in British pubs.
Cricket and Shanghai are also popular. High Score is probably the easiest game
to learn to play. Players alternate taking turns throwing the darts. Each player
gets three darts to throw. Once all three have been thrown, that player tallies
his/her points and removes the darts from the board. The next player takes his/her
turn. There should never be more than three darts on the board at any given
time. Depending on where the dart sticks, they get to tally those points. If
the dart lands on a highlighted spot, then the scores for that round is doubled.
Land in the inner highlighted circle and the score is tripled. Bull’s
eyes are worth 25 points for the outer edge and 50 points for an inner bull’s
eye. Scoring may vary depending on the house rules.
Leagues
You can find leagues similar to bowling or softball in many cities. Teams are formed and consist of 4 to 8 players, depending on the league rules. Players gather one night a week for the series. They usually pay a nominal fee to join and play. They play a variety of games, scores are tallied and at the end of the season a winning team is declared.
