Rules of Darts
If you are a beginning dart thrower, the easiest way to learn to play darts is with the traditional game, called “’01.” A brief review of the rules and some practice time to perfect your technique are all you need to become a pro at this classic game.
The Object
The name “’01” has reference to the beginning number of points each game player receives. The object of “‘01” is to be the first player to reduce your score to zero. Each player begins the game with the same score, such as 501, a common tournament score. Other beginning scores include 301, 601, 801, 1001. Usually, higher point games are played in teams.
Turns
Each player takes a turn throwing three darts, subtracting points scored from their individual (or team) beginning score. The rules state that darts that bounce off of or miss the board have no point value and cannot be thrown again during that turn. Each player removes his darts and records his score before the next player throws.
“Going Out”
The hardest part of the game is finishing at zero. Finishing is called “going out.” According to the rules, your score must reach zero exactly in order to go out, and the finishing dart must hit a “double” section of the board. These sections consist of the narrow outside scoring band as well as the bull’s-eye.
An Example
Let’s say you have 18 points left before you can go out; hitting a double-9 would give you what you need to win. But if you have an odd number score, you will need to throw to reduce your score to an even number. You can’t double out with a score that can’t be divided evenly by two.
Pro Moves
As you master the game and learn the rules, you’ll also master the lingo. A “hat trick” means throwing three bull’s-eyes in one turn. A “ton” means scoring 100 to 150 points in one turn. A “high ton” signifies a score of 151 or greater thrown in one turn.
Once you’ve practiced the basic dart game, and learned the rules there are numerous variations to try—and many completely different games beyond that. It's no wonder that darts have become one of our favorite past times. Be prepared to make new friends and have a lot of fun as you learn the rules of darts. |
